My Make-up favorites

Since I shared my skincare routine with you, I thought I would talk about my make-up favorites. I've always loved make-up and going into Sephora gives me a rush that probably isn't normal. My routine isn't exciting and I never went too crazy with trends but over the years I definitely made some mistakes. Now that my skin has changed a bit and there are a few more wrinkles and a lot less sleep, finally at 41 I think I've finally figured out what works for me. For night I'm either a smoky eye and a nude lip, or a bold red lip and a very simple eye. And for day, it has to be able to be done in less than 5 minutes!

During the summer I could get away with leaving the house with not much more than concealer but now that It's practically winter (HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?) and I've lost a few shades of color already, my dark circles are more prominent and lets face it I just don't want to scare people- I'll do a quick application of NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in a deep V shape under my eye and blend, a quick layer of NARS pure radiant tinted moisturizer, a little Bobbi Brown long wear cream shadow in malted and either Cle De Peau cream blush in #1 or a powder NARS in orgasm. For lips I have two shades that are my go two for day or a casual night out. I love NARS Velvet Matte Lip pencil in Dolce Vita and Smith and Cult Tainted lip stained in Kissing Tiny Flowers which stays forever. I was without it for a few days and slightly lost. It's that good!

Usually I do evening make-up based on what I'm wearing. If f I go for Dark eye/nude lip I reach for a good white/grey/black trio. My favorite eyeshadows are Smashbox, NAKED, NARS and Tom Ford. With a smokey eye I always do a super simple nude like Tom Ford Spanish Pink or the Smith and Cult that I mention above.

My other route is my favorite which is a more understated eye with a light gold or brown shadow and a bright red lip. I have an ARSENAL of red lipstick and I think it can make you look and feel instantly pulled together and awake. I look for a blue undertone for my skin color, and my all time favorites are NARS Heatwave and Oribe Tropic

Flame. Both are a bright orangey/red, the Oribe goes on creamy but lasts forever. If you're nervous to try a bright color, try these first. Other favorites are the NARS MATTE Lip pencils in Cruella, Dragon Girl, Red Square or Mysterious Red if you want a deeper, darker shade. Smith and Cult Tainted lip stain in Mad Heat is amazing and stays forever with no flaking. For a more vampy purple try Oribe in The Violet. It's super moisturizing and goes on like lip balm!

For skin I make sure my eyes and lips are well moisturized and try to apply any sort of moisturizer or primer to clean skin at least an hour before I put on makeup. This lets your skin seem dewy, but gives it long enough to soak in. I have two foundations. My all time favorite is Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua. It's super light and water based, not cheap but you really need just the tiniest little drop for your entire face. I will usually mix that with a little of the Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer for an nice glow. It makes your skin look 100 times better! If I'm having a REALLY bad skin day and need a little more coverage I'll use the ARMANI Luminous silk foundation which is really nice with great coverage without being heavy. At night I will add a little highlighter to my cheekbones, nose, cupids bow, forehead and chin. Right now I'm loving the NARS highlighter trio for that. Always NARS bronzer in LAGUNA and Glossier Boy Brow in brown for my brows. I usually only wear mascara at night and I have tried a lot of them. I love DIORSHOW for special occasions and everyday I use Loreal Voluminous Million Lashes and Lancome Definicils.

Oribe and Smith and Cult make-up are available at The Zealous Root. I highly recommend them both! (Stay tuned for more reviews on this fabulous line as I test the rest!)
